Thermo Fisher Scientific has come out with the new LInspector Edge In-line Mass Profilometer, for full-width electrode mass loading measurement.
The LInspector Edge analyzer introduces the next generation of metrology capabilities through a new analytical technique, in-line mass profilometry, measuring complete edge-to-edge coating profiles in milliseconds with unprecedented resolution and precision.
Bloomy Controls Inc. is exhibiting a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) battery-simulating test system designed to brings the rigor and discipline of a HIL design validation lab onto the individual desktops of multi-person, multi-site development teams. The system, dubbed Desktop BMS, increases the accessibility and convenience of HIL testing, effectively increasing productivity and reducing time-to-market of battery electrification development projects, whether for electric vehicles (EVs), drones, electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, or satellites, robots, and commercial power tools.
Luxinar, a laser technology developer since 1998, is focusing on process improvements possible with its laser sources at The Battery Show Europe. The company is spotlighting its CO2 laser sources and femtosecond lasers for the first time at the event.
Battery technology today is all about increasing power density, and laser processes are being developed to advance this. At high power densities, that is fast charging or discharging processes, lithium separation is currently an issue.
Femtosecond Laser Surface Structuring (FLSS) uses ultrashort pulses of laser light to introduce micropores into the active layer of the battery electrodes, thus mitigating the problem.
The VORATRON Polyurethane Systems products, which include high-strength adhesives and thermally conductive composites, are crucial to achieving the fast-evolving demands of mechanical and thermal management performance that different electric vehicle battery designs require:
Low-density products support the automotive industry's ambition for vehicle weight reductions.
Improved processability, such as low squeeze force and optimized rheology and kinetics, provide versatility and efficiency to different assembly processes.
High performance thermally conductive adhesives and gap fillers that enable the combination of tailored mechanical properties and efficient thermal management which are critical to safety, range, and reliability of electric vehicles.
Incorporating measuring X-ray machines in production lines “is fairly simple, as long as the space is available in the needed area,” Exacon CEO Hagen Berger told us in May. “We are not limited to a specific material-handling system; we can adopt our machines to whatever is available. The only thing we need to take care of is not blocking the X-rays with any metallic materials between tube and detector."
In 2020, Exacom added two new solutions: A superfast inspection system for cylindrical automotive cells that could inspect 180 cells a minute, and the first inline CT system for stacked battery cells.
“Ever since, we’ve improved the systems to be faster and provide the highest stability and reliability," Berger said. "We’ve also put a lot of efforts to have our machines as proven measurement systems.”
Scansonic, a provider of laser processing solutions, addresses this need through its innovations, offering solutions that meet the industry's stringent requirements. At The Battery Show Europe, the company will showcase its latest advancements by demonstrating the critical role of laser processing in the production of EV components through products including the new FCW (Fast Component Welding) system technology.
This innovative system features multiple compact scanner units arranged on a single application plate, allowing for the simultaneous processing of multiple parts. This boosts productivity and ensures higher output within the same timeframe.
The Flexible Transport System (FTS) from Bosch Rexroth is a magnetically propelled transport platform used to boost pallet speed and positioning precision, particularly for transporting heavier loads such as battery modules. Where traditional rollers, chains, or belt systems reach their limits, FTS offers higher accuracy, supports freely programmable individual and synchronized movements, and is faster than traditional systems.
FTS is based on standard linear motor technology, whereby each single workpiece pallet/carrier is moved individually. The system can even perform complex movement patterns without any problems by moving several carriers independently of each other, making the individual process steps in battery manufacturing easier.
Quasi solid-state batteries “enable the use of pure lithium metal as anode material, which has a significantly higher specific capacity than graphite,” Célestine Singer, senior application engineer at Factorial Energy, told us last week. Singer will present her insights at the Battery Show Europe from June 18-20 in Stuttgart.
Factorial first presented its 40 Ah cell with solid electrolyte in April 2021 and, in a July 2021 report, demonstrated a capacity retention rate of 97.3% after 675 cycles at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C).
Trinseo’s VOLTABOND aqueous-based anode binder that binds the graphite and conductivity agent powder together and onto the foil current collector of a battery. VOLTABONDTM binders provide high peel strength, low DCIR and low re-bounce. In addition, its unique chemical structure enhances battery life by offering resistance to electrolyte dissolution.
“By improving electrical conductivity, structural integrity, cyclability, and energy density, with our VOLTABOND latex binders, we’re helping batteries last longer, charge faster, go farther and perform better,” stated Trinseo CTO Han Hendriks. “At less than one percent of the battery’s weight, we can make a big impact on a number of performance characteristics that the industry is looking for.”
The new AI-BMS-on-chip, featuring Eatron’s Intelligent Software Layer and Syntiant’s ultra-low power Neural Decision Processor, delivers a turnkey solution that is integration-friendly. It can unlock 10% additional capacity and extend battery lifespan by up to 25%, significantly reducing time-to-market. The optimized design combines high performance and efficiency in a cost-effective package.
